Although we are quite impressed and pleased with Andrew's vocabulary, correct use of many pronouns, and his sentence building, there are times in which his word pronunciation is a bit (or even A LOT) off!
Here are some of our favorites--see if you can guess what their true meaning is:
"hostage"
"scoof-diaper"
"mysoaker"
"Check"
"Goofer"
"Snoofy"
Ok...so we'll start with some of the easier ones first....
"Snoofy" is better known to the rest of us as Snoopy. With all the holiday specials, Andrew is now familiar with the famous pup. And, although he can pronounce the "p" sound just fine in other situations & we have corrected him to emphasize the "p", he continues to call him "Snoofy".
"Goofer" is of course, Goofy. Given that he has no problem saying, "Snoofy", we know he could correctly pronounce that too. But, from the first time he was ever introduced to the character (sometime last summer around when we went to Disneyland), he always calls him "Goofer". It probably doesn't help that we have now adopted the saying as well! :)
"Check" is a new one. The other night a new Christmas special was on (well, new to us anyway)..."Shrek the Halls". Before then, Andrew knew nothing of Shrek. We've been taping some of the various Christmas specials that have been on and he saw Shrek. So, he wanted to know what his name was (that's been one of his questions about things lately--always wanting to know what different things' or peoples' names are). The "Sh" followed immediately by an "r", must be difficult for him to say, so, he calls him "Check".
Now for the less obvious ones...
"mysoaker" is motorcycle! :) We have gotten him to say "motor" and "cycle", but as soon as the two are put together, "mysoaker" is what comes out. He has been pronouncing it this way for a year, so we think this one might be sticking around awhile.
"hostage" is none other than "sausage". For a quick bit of protein that's easy to have in the mornings, we sometimes make turkey sausages. They come already cooked, so all we have to do is heat them up. We don't think he has ever heard the actual word, hostage. So, we're not sure how he came up with that. But, it must be easier to say that "sausage". What's really funny is when he exclaims, "want my hostages" or "Mommy, hold my hostage".
And now, our favorite. "scoof-diaper" (which actually was originally, "scoofadiaper").
So, Andrew comes up to Brian a couple of weeks ago, holding one of his battery operated toys. He says, "Daddy, need my scoofadiaper". Brian and I both look at each other with puzzled looks.
Brian (to Andrew): "What do you need, Bud?"
Andrew: "My scoofadiaper".
Brian: "Your scoofadiaper?!"
Andrew: "Yah my scoofadiaper"
Brian: "For what?"
Andrew: "Fix the batteries"
You can almost see Brian and I both repeating the word, "scoofadiaper, scoofadiaper" over & over in our minds trying to figure out what it could be. Then, it hits us. The batteries thing finally made us realize.
Brian: "Ooohhh--your screwdriver?!"
Andrew: "Yahhhh! My scoofadiaper, Daddy!!"
Some of the Christmas decorations & a few of Andrew's toys recently needed the batteries replaced. So, Andrew had been "helping" Daddy fix them by using the screwdriver to get into the battery compartment. It's only natural then that when his toy wasn't working right, he needed his "scoofdiaper" to fix it! :)
