A Place to Play

Whew! We had a busy day! The weather has been gorgeous, so we took the opportunity to do a backyard project before the summer heat sets in. We decided that the east part of the backyard would be the perfect spot to set up a place to play for Andrew. The first step in making that happen was removing the olive tree (which took place with the help of Brian's dad a few weeks ago). For a reminder, here are some views of the backyard prior to today:
In January--first look at the house
When we moved in--OUT of control weeds!
For Andrew's birthday party--play equipment all over
So today, we set out to get everything done over there. The first step was removing some of the rock. We have no idea how much we actually moved, but we have a good sized rock pile on the side of the house now.
After rock clearing, we put down some weed-stop tarp. Andrew thought this all was great fun and was such a good helper (shoveling rock, hammering stakes, etc.).
Ideally, we'd like to put down recycled, ground-up tire. However, the cost is WAY more expensive than more traditional wood mulch. So, for now, we just put down the wood stuff. The ground is much softer with it and it doesn't even feel too bad to walk on barefoot. Andrew seems to really enjoy it.
We plan to add some larger wood chips around the area and do a bit of edging--just to give it a more finished appearance. But, even without, we think it looks SO much nicer than before and are hoping it works out well as a place for the kiddos to play!
